Carl Jung, in his book, Memories, Dreams, Reflections wrote: “Our task is . . . to become conscious of the contents that press upward from the unconscious . . . the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.

Using metaphors, dream imagery and symbolism, my work is a series of scaled miniature constructions exploring possible ways awareness happens. One way of glimpsing into the subconscious mind is through an appreciation of the visual language of dreams. Over the years remembering and writing down dreams has given me an opportunity to make personal discoveries, sharpen my ability to focus and to understand the nature of metaphor.

I love the idea of creating small spaces that draw the viewer into deeper contemplation. When we are able to see in this way, awareness is amplified. I am most attracted to the space within the creative process that is transformative. Much of my work either attempts to capture the moment of awareness or to illuminate the process of awareness. I believe that when we work at becoming more conscious, it is an opportunity for change. When a forgotten memory surfaces or a series of dreams recorded, our personal perception shifts. Whether this happens in an instant or over time; our past, present and future changes. We are transformed!

After drawing a plan, calculating scale, and creating a mock up, I always begin building from the inside out. Plastic foam core board as well as wallpaper are my most used construction materials. Jewelry findings and hardware supplies are sources for objects and embellishments. A piece of filigree becomes a drawer handle; the head of a picture hanging nail, a door knob; various sized beads represent bottles and caps; an earring back, a faucet; and so forth. My artwork is an extension of the paper doll houses I built as a child, when a jewelry box was a dresser; a perfume bottle was a lamp; a doily was a rug; and a book was a bed. My work illuminates transformation, both in the materials used and the subject matter chosen.

I believe that the process by which we expand our own awareness is a spiritual journey that always unfolds in the most creative way. Within small spaces, as in life and dreams, everything has the potential to become something else.
